| What is a Domain name? |
|
The internet is a vast array of computers connected together, and each is assigned an unique address, otherwise known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address.
Believe it or not, the computer you are using now has been assigned an address as well. Your address is 38.103.63.57! |
| Having to remember a sequence of numbers can be confusing especially when it comes to websites. It's easier to remember something like google than it is to remember 64.233.189.104. |
| To make it easier for us, a unique name is assigned to each address. A domain name is, therefore, a unique text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet. |
| When you type in a website address, the address of the website is looked up on a system of database servers which maintain the relationship between IP addresses and domain names. |
| The Domain Name System (DNS), a more people-friendly naming system, translates Internet domain names into IP numbers, which is what computers need to find each other on the Internet. |
| Step 1 in setting up a website is, therefore, to register a domain name. The domain name should preferably be short and easy to remember, and should reflect your company name or product/services. Domain names are unique however, and you will first need to check if the name you want is available. |
